A repertoire of methods and scenarios is available for the implementation of this basic idea of research-based learning, ranging from the early promotion of critical thinking in short lecture phases to independent collaboration on real research and development projects.
Students are particularly motivated when they engage specifically and actively with the content and methods of research as they learn. At the same time, they gain greater insight into what is currently happening at their university’s institutes. It is particularly valuable for sustainable competence building if the learning process and learning actions are oriented to the typical research activities of the subject. This also gives the student the chance to develop a research-oriented attitude.
In order for research-oriented teaching to be carried out in the laboratory, seminar room or lecture hall, teachers are required who act with the appropriate didactic competence. The Center for Teaching and Learning (ZLL) at TU Hamburg has therefore developed the one-year qualification program “Research-Based Learning at TUHH” for new academic staff. Since the summer of 2015, they have been training in a one-year program consisting of six workshops, accompanying practical projects and a final presentation. Each participant systematically analyzes his or her own course and develops it further in an evidence-based and research-related manner.
If entire study sections or study programs are to be didactically improved and accentuated, the further qualification of the teachers can be directly incorporated here. For the didactic development of the study program as a research-related profile development, the expertise of the ZLL is available to create learning objectives cooperatively and to subsequently design and coordinate a study structure for a gradual build-up of competencies. A preliminary analysis of the course of study on research-based learning can shed light on the initial situation in order to specifically locate consulting and innovation projects in the curricular context.
These coordinated offerings for research-based learning as part of academic staff development, as consulting at event and module level, and for program development support the traditionally strong role of research at the TU Hamburg and help to link it with modern university teaching.

The fifth course group started its qualification program "Research-based Learning at TUHH" with 10 academic staff members on 13.06.2017. They will look at five different courses under the concept of inquiry-based learning and implement them during the 2017/18 winter semester.
