Which digital tool supports my teaching concept?

Selection guide for your digital teaching

Padlet, Pingo, Mahara, Etherpad – what are they anyway and for what purpose can I use which tool for my digital teaching? The possibilities seem endless, but unfortunately there is not enough time to deal with them. But which of the many tools fits my teaching concept and the learning objectives of my event? The ZLL – in cooperation with the TUHH Computer Centre and the Hamburg Open Online University (HOOU) – offers you support in choosing digital tools for your teaching in three decision trees.

The starting point for the respective decision tree is the following three questions:

1. how do I want to present teaching/learning content to my students?

2. how do I want to support students in actively engaging with teaching/learning content?

3. which channels for digital communication with and among students do I want to use?

The first overview shows applications that help to create, prepare or provide teaching material for students, be it text, image or video material.

In the decision tree for active engagement with teaching/learning content, the tools are assigned to activating elements of digital teaching, such as surveys, refexion tasks or digital noticeboards.

The third selection guide provides orientation with regard to the communication possibilities in synchronous and asynchronous digital teaching and also takes the group size into account.

In close cooperation with the TUHH Computer Centre and the Hamburg Open Online University (HOOU) and on the initiative of the Vice-President of Teaching, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kerstin Kuchta, tools were selected and explained in short profiles. In these profiles (which you can access by clicking on the name in the pdf document), you will find descriptions of the functions and technical information, as well as tips and suggestions for use and further links to tutorials or reports from teaching practice. In addition, where possible, we name contact persons for didactic and technical questions and the registration modalities for the respective tool. The descriptions of the tools are continuously updated.

Let yourself be inspired by the decision trees and the multitude of possibilities. We would be very pleased to hear about your experiences with the tools, but also about your impression of the decision trees themselves. We would also like to hear about other tools you like to use and how your students react to your digital teaching.

Feel free to send us an email with your impressions and experiences to: stephanie.wichmann@tuhh.de

For direct exchange among colleagues at the TUHH on digital teaching, we recommend that you use the channels in Mattermost. Here you can log in with your Kerberos password.

We wish you much success in planning and implementing your teaching and we hope you enjoy trying out the possibilities to design your teaching digitally!
