Summary

The shear stiffness of walls can be considerably reduced by window openings. But bonded glass panes contribute to the shear stiffness particularly in case of large opening ratios. This applies to continuous strips of windows or glass fronts on mega yachts, ferries or cruise ships. The research project focuses on the integration of the bonded glass in the strength analysis of ships. It is funded with public means within the program “Industrial Cooperative Research” by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology via the AiF and it is coordinated by the Center of Maritime Technologies (CMT) in Hamburg. The project is carried out in cooperation with industrial partners like ship yards, window and adhesive manufacturers, engineering offices and classification societies at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM).
