Outline: Within the LESSMAT-project the design procedures of passenger trains and cruise ships will be investigated in a cross-industry research project. Since reduction of mass of a vehicle in general holds significant potential in sustainability and cost of manufacture, special attention is given to their lightweight construction and automated production. This will be achieved by exploring novel design approaches focusing on optimized material utilization and production procedures. In these approaches both simulation-based and machine-learning-based design procedures will come into play. TUHH’s work will be mainly on developing these design approaches and implementing industry-specific boundary conditions and objective functions. Furthermore, a fully automated demonstrator will be installed at TUHH in order to put the developed procedures into practice by manufacturing a full-scale specimen.
