Abstract

A direct approach, which can be used during the design process, to account for the effect of welding residual stress and deformation due to multi-pass welding on the buckling strength of HY-80 spherical shell under hydrostatic loading is presented in this study. It is based on a direct numerical calculation of the residual stress and deformation during the welding process, including metallurgical phase change, which are taken as initial condition for a nonlinear buckling analysis. It is shown, that the effect of welding residual stress and deformation on the buckling strength is rather small for the R/t-ratio considered (R/t = 100).
