Biocatalytic cascades and one-pot multi-step enzymatic reactions have attracted growing interest owing to several important advantages:
- Alternative cofactor regeneration systems for redox enzymes e.g., ‘smart cosubstrates’ and biocatalytic cascades.
- Higher product yields and productivities achieved by such designs.
- Chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity of various biocatalysts.
Nowadays, redox enzymes that usually require expensive cofactors for the electron transfer between molecules are mostly coupled in a cascade fashion. This allows simultaneous cofactor regeneration enabling more efficient and economical oxidation as well as reduction.
